It is common knowledge among dabblers in the arcane that many other worlds
than our own carry on an existence in a space that is both at one with
ours, yet distant as well. Seven of these worlds, the seven STRATA, are the
sources for mortal magic. If one aspect of a stratum is its distance
from our mundane world, then exactly how far away is it? We all know the
tenets taught to the novice, "the Channelling stratum is closest, and
thus the most powerful," etc. etc., but is it a fathom, a league, or a mile
from my doorstep to the Chanelling stratum?

Recent research has revealed that in some regions of the earth certain
strata are close, but in others they are far away. Consider, for a moment,
the lowly trade of well-digging: in lands near the coast the well-digger may
only need to penetrate a few ells, but in a mountainous district perhaps the
well will be driven many fathoms into the earth before it yields water. So
it is with the strata; see how the high art of spellcraft mirrors the low
art of well-digging.

There is a major difference in form between the depth of water beneath the
surface of the earth and the "depth" of a given stratum: whereas with water,
here it may be deep and there it may be shallow, then deep again and even
further shallow once more, in the case of strata there is one point in the
world where each of the seven is "shallow", and as one moves away from
this point, the stratum becomes deeper and deeper. These differences are
not enough to interfere with the use of magic anywhere on the earth, although
it is now widely held that were a mage to travel far enough into the heavens,
he would find access to magic increasingly difficult, eventually losing it
altogether. However, there is arcane significance to the spot where a given
stratum is closest to the usual world. This spot is called the "peristratum".
It is the only place where certain magicks intimately tied to a given
stratum, such as the mighty 'attunement' spell, can be cast.

The peristrata appear to shift occasionally. On average these shifts occur
every year or so, but they happen at irregular intervals. This means that
some hermetic technique is required to find the peristrata, they cannot
merely be recorded in a spellbook as is the case with so much of arcane
knowledge. Fortunately, the guild has recently developed an instrument that
measures the alignment of the local equipotentials, the stratiscopic PENDULUM.
